Biography

Caroline is the Curator of European Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto where she curated the 2019 exhibition “Impressionism in the Age of Industry”. Prior to joining the AGO in 2017, she held various curatorial roles at the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Caroline holds a Doctorate in Art History from the University of Maryland with a dissertation on Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and the history of memory. Shields’s area of specialty is nineteenth-century French art.
