Biography

Jessica Mace is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, specializing in the art and architecture of Canada. Her research interests centre on questions of modernity and the circulation of knowledge in the 19th and 20th centuries, extending to current issues in heritage. Through a number of different typologies and contexts, she explores long overlooked topics, aiming to bring new narratives into the public sphere, and to contextualize the visual culture of Canada within broader debates.

Her work has been supported by the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative at the University of Toronto, le Centre interuniversitaire d’études sur les lettres, les arts et les traditions; a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship; The St George's Society of Toronto; and a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC).

An award-winning educator, Jessica focuses on the student experience, whether in small seminars or the large lecture hall. She is constantly exploring innovative pedagogies, most notably experiential learning, which she employs both in her courses as well as in her work overseeing the undergraduate internship program for the Department of Art History.

Recent courses include:

  • Architecture of Toronto (FAH 199)
  • Canadian Painting, 1665-1960 (FAH 248)
  • Studies in Canadian Architecture & Landscapes (FAH 473)
  • Framing Canadian Art (special topics course, FAH 480)
  • Internships (FAH 481)

Since 2015, she has been the Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada and currently serves as Secretariat Officer on the Executive Committee of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies. She is also an Associate Researcher with the Canada Research Chair in Urban Heritage at the Université du Québec à Montréal and adjunct faculty in the Graduate Department of Visual Art and Art History at York University.
