About the organization:
The Christopher Cutts Gallery was founded in Toronto in 1986. The gallery is committed to the development and growth of contemporary culture, both domestically and abroad. It takes an active role in recognizing and promoting visual art through an ongoing exhibition program, art fair participation and catalogue publishing. More than just a display space, the Christopher Cutts Gallery offers itself as an important resource to art aficionados, collectors, critics, curators, historians and visual artists.
The Gallery represents both modernist and contemporary artists, including:
- Estates of historically significant post-WWII Canadian artists, most notably five members of Painters Eleven, who exhibited collectively from 1953 to 1960.
- Established senior Canadian artists, such as Eldon Garnet, Ron Martin and Michael Snow.
- Mid-career and emerging artists from Canada and overseas.
About the placement:
This internship will allow the student to gain valuable experience in a commercial art gallery setting and expand their knowledge of Canadian post-war and contemporary art history. The hands-on experience of handling our extensive art collection and inventory will provide them with invaluable skills they can use in various careers in the art world.
The Gallery Intern will have the opportunity to shadow and assist the gallery staff in all aspects of the gallery’s day-to-day operations, as well as short and long-term projects, including: Research, Exhibition Installation, Collection Management, Publishing, Administration, and Social Media/Website Marketing.
Responsibilities & tasks may include:
- Research and Writing: Assist in researching and writing about artists and exhibitions This research can include direct interviews with the estates of deceased artists and with current practicing artists Use their research to write short biographies and texts to be published on the CCG website, print catalogues, and social media
- Exhibition Installation: Assist in the takedown and installation of exhibitions as we swap shows every month This includes the removal and safe storage of works, plastering and painting of walls, and hanging the next show.
- Collection Management: Assist in organizing and cataloguing the Gallery’s collection of artwork, books, and legacy records. Sort through and organize legacy records of files, slides, and photos, providing scans and photos.
- Publishing: Assist with publishing advertising materials, catalogues, and email newsletters.
- Administration: Assist in checking emails, finding messages relevant to the business, and handling them when relevant or directing them to the appropriate person. Answering phone calls as necessary. Assist with taking messages, managing schedules, and organizing files.
- Social Media: Assist in the creation of Instagram/Facebook/LinkedIn posts Research, design, and create video content for TikTok.
- Website Updating: Adding works to the website Editing photos. Writing descriptions/provenance etc.
Special requirements: The intern should have strong writing and organizational skills and an interest in Art and Gallery operations. The internship will take place on site in Toronto. Interns may be required to bring their own computer.
Timing or hours of placement: The placement is 8-10 hours per week for 12 weeks during the Winter 2025 semester. The gallery hours are 10:00am-6:00pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Timing of the placement throughout the week to be discussed with the site supervisor.
Credit: Half credit (0.5). This internship is for pass/fail course credit at the University of Toronto through the Department of Art History. Only University of Toronto students are eligible. This is not a paid position.
