Guidelines on Retired Faculty Engagement

The University of Toronto values the continued contributions and expertise of retired faculty colleagues. The following guidelines provide clarity regarding retired and emeritus faculty engagement with the department in accordance with established academic practices. Links to applicable University of Toronto policies are included.

  • Retired faculty may be called on as a valued resource for advice and institutional memory.
  • Engagement with the department is typically on the basis of specific teaching assignments (on a stipend basis) or supervisory relationships, subject to approval by the Chair.
  • Retired faculty are appointed to the rank of Emeritus at their request; this is an honorary title with no specific duties, obligations, or privileges.
  • With Full Graduate Faculty Membership (Emeritus) status from the School of Graduate Studies, retired faculty may continue preexisting graduate supervisions.
  • New supervisory relationships involving retired faculty require the approval of the Graduate Chair.
  • Retired faculty may be eligible to apply for external research grants subject to prior approval by the Chair.
  • Retired faculty may not serve on department committees, including tenure committees; they do not attend faculty meetings or vote on departmental matters.
