May 26, 2025 by Department of Art History

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Giancarla Periti has been promoted to the rank of professor, effective July 1, 2025!

Professor Periti completed her PhD in Art History at Johns Hopkins University in 2003 after earlier studies at the Università Cattolica in Milan and the Università di Genova. She held positions at Yale University, the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and the Università di Macerata before joining the University of Toronto Department of Art History in 2010. She was granted tenure in 2015.

Her scholarship has focused on Italian Renaissance art, with particular emphasis on female patronage, monasticism, and the study of artistic centres beyond Florence and Rome. Professor Periti’s book In the Courts of Religious Ladies: Art, Vision, and Pleasure in Italian Renaissance Convents (2016) received the American Association for Italian Studies Book Prize. She co-edited the influential volumes Ravenna in the Imagination of Renaissance Art (2020) and The Network of Cassinese Arts in Renaissance Italy (2021). Her forthcoming monograph on Correggio is much anticipated by scholars in the field.

Professor Periti is an accomplished teacher whose courses attract large enrolments while holding students to high standards. She is also a respected mentor who has created transformative opportunities for graduate students. Currently she directs our international doctoral cluster with Sorbonne University and the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris, part of the University of Toronto–France Art History Partnership. She served the Department of Art History for two years as interim chair, providing exceptional leadership during a time of growth, challenges, and new opportunities.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Periti on this well-earned achievement!
