The Department of Art History extends heartfelt congratulations to Xin Yue (Sylvia) Wang on successfully defending today her doctoral dissertation, titled “’Tasting God’ – The Last Supper in Medieval Art.” It is always a profound pleasure to recognize the milestone achievement that comes with the successful completion of a Ph.D., which represents years of long, diligent, and often lonely work in pursuit of intellectual and academic excellence.
Sylvia’s dissertation is a wide-ranging examination of the deeply theological and spiritual aspects of Last Supper imagery, with a focus on manuscript illuminations from the twelfth through sixteenth centuries. Her committee was impressed with Sylvia’s ability to master this rich spectrum of material and to tease out both the complexities and ambiguities in this art.
Sylvia has just started a Graduate Internship at the Getty Museum in the Department of Manuscripts, and so we also congratulate her on this exciting new chapter in her professional path. Please join us in wishing Sylvia only the best in her current position and for her future work!
